about our films | super 8 and 16mm wedding films

Did you know that aside from our photography we shoot motion picture too?!  If you have been following along for a while now this isn’t exactly news. You know that we added nostalgic cinema to our offerings last year.   Since that time we have had couples gasping over their motion picture vignettes and looking back at snippets of their day from a totally unique artistic perspective.  This extension of our business was a long awaited and exciting addition to The Why We Love and has since been an ever-growing part of our vision, artistry, story, and brand ;  one that felt like a natural way to achieve our mission of being artful and connected story tellers.  If you love our way of capturing life through photography then you will die over the artistry in our cinematic shorts.

So what’s the process like?

Like I mentioned before, we shoot film, strictly film, no digital or high definition video. We are not your typical wedding videographers.  This is not some political stance against HD, in fact there are rumors we will be adding HD to our repertoire in 2013.   In any case, Kodak Film is still our medium of choice;)  The organic nature of film helps create an imaginative and nostalgic experience for the subject and the viewer.  The sound of the cameras alone, while shooting, is enough to cause anyone within hearing distance to have an immediate flashback. The complete process is pretty simple and yet completely handcrafted.  We shoot a variety of vintage cameras, have the film digitally ranked or do some dirty telecine ourselves, soundtrack the film, edit the film, and deliver on web and dvd. You view, share, laugh, cry, love and re-live!

How do you soundtrack the film?

We are often inspired by the day, the raw footage, the feel, or the vibe of the couple.  Many hours are spent on crafting just the right soundtrack.  Those hours are usually spent listening to LP, after 45, after LP, after 45, and so on.  Yes we still listen to vinyl.  It is a huge creative influence of ours and the bone structure to our soundtracks.

What about voice over / sound sync?

Yes we can do it!  Special moments throughout the day can be recorded as sound bits and added as creative edits and sound overlays to any motion picture.

Do I get all the raw footage?

Sorry, you do not.  And trust us, you wouldn’t want it all (but if you do, let’s talk).  Film is precious!  Unlike digital video where you can just keep rolling and rolling, switch out a card and keep rolling some more, Super 8 and 16mm has strategically sought out, planned, and often creatively directed shots.  Yes we will capture the natural, intimate, and candid moments of your day (and do our best to be in more than one spot at one time while doing so) but the reality is that we are a small team and we keep it that way with your best interests in mind.  For larger wedding parties and extended films we will bring in extra cinematographers to help capture as much of your day as possible.

Tell me a bit more about the finished product.

Well, we invite you to see for yourself!  As you will see this is not your typical wedding film.  We understand that it is also not for everyone!  If you want a video that is a recount of your day from beginning to end our motion pictures are not for you!  We will gladly recommend videographers that we feel would do a rad job.  On the other hand, if you are looking for an artfully curated film highlighting the essence of your day, is filled with emotion and connection, and shot / edited by two pretty special creatives then maybe….. juuuuust maybe, our films are for you!

Here’s where you say, “YES, we like you!  What are the collections you offer and how much are we talking about here?”

Well thanks!  Now you are just making us blush;)  Pricing for our motion pictures start at only $2600 for vignettes and $4000 for full day featurettes.  Like our wedding photography collections all featurettes come with a base coverage of 8 hours!  That’s right… 8 hours!  We feel this is the minimum amount we need to really capture and retell the story of your day.  Now if you are eloping, or having a small intimate gathering, let’s talk… we can structure a timeline that is right for you!  If however you are having a local, or destination wedding with 75+ guests, in our experience, 8 hours is the minimum needed coverage and therefore that is what we provide.  Aside from the day of your coverage, collections are based on the length of film you desire.  We currently offer 3 different approximate length motion pictures ~5min, ~10, and ~20 minute films.  We also provide motion picture for “save the dates”, engagement sessions, and lifestyle sessions. Contact us for more info and we will gladly send over our pricing catalog.
