How did you come up with the name "The Why We Love"?
Well, naturally let us first explain "why" that is the name of our company and then we'll fill you in on how the name actually came to be. There are certainly a lot of things we love in life, but we find that it is all the reasons why we love what we love that makes us so interesting. Remember when you were a child your favorite question to ask was "why?". Somehow knowing why something was the way it was helped us see the full picture, understand the full story. It was that very principle that propelled you as a child and it is the same principle that propels us still today. More simply put, it is “The Why’s” in life that fuel our passion and creativity while drawing out our unique gift of storytelling with photography.
Now back to the "how?"...
One night while trying to figure out what we should call ourselves we kept asking the question "what is the why we love what we do?" There were too many reasons to put all in a business name we figured The Why We Love best summed them all up.
What is with the love obsession with beards?
Mostly because the word itself is easily mistaken for the word "beers". For example: "Hey Kevin that's a nice full beard?" can sort of sound like "Hey Kevin want a iced cold beer?" You see how this could be awesome?!
So what should we wear for our photo session?
First of all be you! We are interested in telling your story and part of that is capturing you in the most natural way possible. But since you asked us, we are happy to give our tips on how to look your best. Avoid matchy, matchy or anything that would remind you of a photo your parents made you take at the shopping mall when you were 10 (unless you had some mad style back in the day then stick to it). Don't be afraid of color, layers, textures, and patterns. Use colors you would primarily find in nature as your base and work from there, grays, tans, off whites, and blues. If you would like to partner with a stylist we highly recommend it and have some rad friends who would love to work with you to help you feel like your best self while in front of the camera.
What type of gear do you use?
Canon (film and digital, still and cinema), Mamiya, Holga, Minolta, and Polaroid.
Why do you still shoot film?
For the same reasons we still listen to vinyl. It is simply beautiful.
So how does this husband/wife team thing work anyway?
For most of our sessions we work as a team. Part of why our imagery stands out to you is more than simply our artistic viewpoints as individuals but the complete story and the chemistry that takes place when those two viewpoints collide. There are a lot of amazing photo taking teams out there! Practically speaking it makes sense to have multiple vantage points when trying to capture the organic nature of your wedding or visually tell any story for that matter. What is so special, and unique to us, is that because we are husband and wife we are providing both the feminine and masculine points of view on any given shoot. In the end we combine the imagery and deliver a collection that is a treasured story to share for generations. When one is shooting cinema and the other is shooting stills sometimes we like to bring along a friend to help out from time to time.
Ok, so then how about intimates sessions? Will both of you be there?
Not on this one! We may scout the location together and strategize on best lighting, and different technical variables but when it comes time to shoot Danielle is flying solo on this one. One thing Danielle is really passionate about is celebrating the true essence of a woman's beauty.
What is your favorite movie?
Him: The Karate Kid
Her: Stranger than Fiction, no Once... or wait, Roman Holiday, no... Sience of Sleep, or ummm.... (yeah try to picking a movie with her on date night)
Do you really believe in Santa Clause?
Yup!
Do you have insurance?
Yup. Lots.
What makes you tick?
Waking up next to each other, knowing we are going to work doing something we absolutely love, and doing it together.
Will you travel?
Anytime, anywhere, anyway possible. We are partial to road trips and Airstreams though.
What is your photographic style?
Some might call it photojournalistic, and others artistic, we just think it is all our own. We do however get up close and personal. We have an intimate, connected way of shooting so that our images are more reflective of how you feel than simply how you look.
